This Just In (yes, I've been invited to participate)
Unity and Diversity Sault Ste. Marie in partnership with the Baha’i community of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma Multicultural Students’ Association will host World Religion Day. The celebration will be held at 2:00 pm on January 17, 2010 at the Speak Easy, in Algoma University, parking is free. This annual event will focus on prayers and music from many faiths in the community. Included in the festivities are groups from the Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Islamic, First Nations and Baha’i faiths. World Religion Day is marked on the third Sunday in January annually around the world and in this community has been held for nearly twenty years. For more information about World Religion Day, please visit: www.worldreligionday.org. This year’s theme will be: “To bring peace and harmony through unity, and religion/spirituality as building block of harmony.” The event is free and refreshments will be served. Media Contact: Sarah Broad teddyandwanda@gmail.com or 949-8912 “We hope that this year’s celebration will have more coming together in harmony than ever! In a world where fragmentation seems almost inevitable, based on the system in place, we hope that this year can begin a “global healing” of sorts, and we will work towards making 2010 the year of Inclusion and Appreciation of Diversity.” ---U & D |

Things I'm Excited About
...because I haven't written anything in a couple of days, due mostly to the joy of having two honeys in one place. ( sanity cut )Yep, life is good. Current Mood: cheerfulCurrent Music: DJ Earworm - No One Takes Your Freedom |

More thoughts on what I'm reading (updated)
Yeah, I just can't resist. I just cleared the scene wherein Madrone is describing her home to the gathering of women at Sara's house, and it reminded me how much there is to think about, all wrapped up in this one novel. ( courtesy cut ) |

Reading and Re-Reading: Observations
There are a few works of fiction so important to me, so heartbreakingly beautiful and deeply moving that I have to re-read them every couple of years. They're irresistible. And when I say a few, I mean a very few: there are four of them, and three constitute a single trilogy. What I'm not currently re-reading is Guy Gavriel Kay's The Fionavar Tapestry, though I did so this past summer; what I am is Starhawk's The Fifth Sacred Thing. As I make my way through it (and I'm taking my time, because I can), I'm feeling my thoughts shifting slightly out of the priorities of the body and into those of the spirit. Whether they'll stay there is anyone's guess. ( sanity cut )...maybe I'll come back to this sometime when I'm not watching Watchmen (*wink*) and thus distracted as hell. I blame the boys. |

Well, this is it!
By my clock, just a hair under eleven hours left in 2009. Kyle and I are hitting the road within the next half hour or so: I'm doing what the brides tell me is Blind River's first same-sex wedding this evening, then we're bringing Will back for a visit. Since Will doesn't get off work until late, we won't be back before midnight, so I'll take this opportunity to wish all you lovelies a joyful NYE celebration and a fantastic year ahead. I wish I could give you all a smooch at midnight, but this'll have to do. MWAH! |

Because I'm fucking angry.
I choose to channel my anger over rampant self- and other-loathing into something positive, rather than getting involved in that clusterfuck of a thread on Zeta. Crystal, you are as always a goddess. I, Amanda Zuke, pledge to speak kindly about my body. I promise not to talk about how fat my thighs or stomach or butt are, or about how I really have to lose 5 or 15 or 50 pounds. I promise not to call myself a fat pig, gross, or any other self-loathing, trash-talking phrase. I vow to be kind to myself and my body. I will learn to be grateful for its strength and attractiveness, and be compassionate toward its failings. I will remind myself that bodies come in all shapes and sizes, and that no matter what shape and size my body is, it’s worthy of kindness, compassion, and love.

What I'm Reading
I've been avoiding frustration today, unsuccessfully, by locking myself in my...well, it's not really an office, it's the spare room, and it's full of assorted crap, but my lappy and my comfy chair are in here, and...ok, my office. Good enough. So I've been bouncing around and reading stuff. I started by checking my feeds. Not much exciting there, except that I followed a link from Sex Is Not The Enemy [NOTE: NSFW, and also not safe for most people's aesthetics; don't click if you have an aversion to explicit depictions of varied sexualities and bodily configurations -- much love to Tweak for the initial linkage] to Greta Christina's Blog (and its links to her other writings). I love it far more than is reasonable. She writes about religion from a particularly militant, even evangelical, atheist perspective with which I'm not entirely comfortable, but which I find fascinating; more importantly, she talks about sex and sexuality from a very liberated perspective with which I am entirely comfortable (and which I find equally fascinating). She talks about other things, too, of course, but those are the big ones. One of her posts even reminded me that I've been wanting to read Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbie's Lost Girls (just as pornographic, but also as beautifully written and illustrated as advertised), so I downloaded the whole thing to look over. Then from there, I skipped over to Dr. Marty Klein's Sexual Intelligence blog. From there...who knows? Some of the posts I most enjoyed today: Trekkie Religion and Secular Judaism: What If Religion Really Were Just a Metaphor?Sexual Optimism and a Changing WorldTrying Anything Twice101 Positions That Won't Spice Up Your Sex LifeMy Vision for a Sexual WorldAre We Having Sex Now or What?International Human Rights Day MUST Include Sexual RightsNow I need to stop reading, because my brain is 'splody.
